MotoGP 2013: Marquez heads test as Hernandez joins Pramac

Marc Marquez was quickest in Monday’s post-race test at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. As the championship leader moved ahead of Jorge Lorenzo, Suzuki continued its programme ahead of a MotoGP™ return and Yonny Hernandez made his first appearance in Ignite Pramac Racing colours.


The full day of testing gave those present a perfect opportunity to put right what had not worked over the San Marino Grand Prix race weekend, as well as trialing new and updated components both for the rest of this season and for 2014. For the record, Marquez’s last-gasp lap of 1’33.264 demoted Lorenzo by two tenths of a second, with Valentino Rossi completing the top three on the second Yamaha Factory Racing bike.



For Repsol Honda Team, the programme revolved around a non-liveried evolution bike of the one first sampled in the Aragon test that followed the Catalan GP in June; this was the first time that particular version of the machine had been ridden, as rain had prevented Casey Stoner from doing so at his last Motegi test. Marquez and Dani Pedrosa also worked with the current bike, focusing on a new swingarm and new rear shocks.

Suzuki stuck to their usual plan in terms of rider roles, with Randy de Puniet serving as the main tester alongside Nobuatsu Aoki. Ahead of the company’s return to the World Championship in 2015, running at Misano is likely to come as a great help in order to extract data from a new track in a bid to define chassis development to a greater level; the marque continues to test with Mitsubishi ECU software for the time being, but is working with the Magneti Marelli spec system back at base. Individually, Suzuki will continue testing at Misano across Tuesday and Wednesday.

There was a new challenge for Yonny Hernandez, as the Colombian is now riding for Pramac Racing Team to cover for the injured Ben Spies. He used the test as an opportunity to adapt to the bike ahead of the Aragon race, while teammate Andrea Iannone looked into Brembo brake discs and smaller components, experimenting with settings ahead of specific upcoming race events. Brakes was also the prime focus for Ducati Team, with Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso then looking into both software development and clutch settings. Michele Pirro was back in Ducati Test Team colours, sharing his bike with Franco Battaini to analyse a 2014-spec engine plus new software, in order to share feedback with engineers who continue to work on the development of next year’s machine.

GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista made the top five, placing the emphasis on Showa front forks and his Nissin brakes, as he and LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl sandwiched Pedrosa into sixth position. In Bradl’s case, the workload consisted of mapping and bike geometry, including suspension modifications. At Avintia Blusens, Hector Barbera resumed work with the new pneumatic valve engine, having suffered chatter during Sunday’s race, while teammate Hiroshi Aoyama began the day with his more conventional engine that had failed during Free Practice on Friday.

The timesheet was completed by Michele Magnoni, currently competing in the Superstock 1000 championship. The Italian rode Lukas Pesek’s Came IodaRacing Project machine and could soon become the team’s official reserve rider, while compatriot Claudio Corti was involved in trying out a Magneti Marelli ECU software upgrade at NGM Mobile Forward Racing; this was also run by Michael Laverty, who was otherwise kept highly occupied with back-to-back comparison runs between the PBM in-house bike and the ART machine previously ridden by Hernandez.



Although Marquez shook things up by posting the eventual quickest time with the 2014 prototype Honda right before the chequered flag signaled the end of an eight-hour day, activities had started very calmly as the circuit had been left drenched by a heavy rainstorm during the night.

The Gran Premio Aperol di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli got underway today with a packed pre-race press conference featuring Repsol Honda Team’s championship leader Marc Marquez, Yamaha Factory Racing duo Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi, Energy T.I. Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone, Repsol Honda’s Team Principal Livio Suppo, as well as Yamaha Factory Racing’s Managing Director Lin Jarvis.


The main talking point for Marquez was whether his injured shoulder from Silverstone has improved: “I feel quite good, nearly 100%. It’s not perfect, the shoulder, but I have good memories at Misano. Every year I ride quite well and it looks like Honda is quite good here. Brno and Silverstone are big circuits with fast corners. This is smaller, but I usually ride quite well on small circuits.”


Yet it was Lorenzo who trumped Marquez by announcing the arrival of the seamless transmission, putting them level with the Honda’s gearbox: “It [seamless transmission] will be here for the weekend. We can say that. Tomorrow! After a nice victory at Silverstone, normally Misano is good for me, I have always finished first or second in MotoGP. I like the track and I think we’re in good shape.”

Rossi, for whom this is his home-circuit, has good memories of the track: “Yes, this is a special track for me because I grew up here, and the first time I used a real bike on a circuit was here. It’s my home Grand Prix, so it is a special track and I like it. I have had good results in the past, especially with the Yamaha but also with my best result for Ducati last year. We have to improve on the results of the last three races and try to fight with the top three guys.

“We will try the new gearbox from tomorrow and we are so happy. For sure it is important, it is very good for the rider and a big help. Misano is a track on which you use the gearbox a lot, so we hope that will be a good advantage when fighting with the Hondas.”

Iannone, who has had an injury-plagued time in his first year in MotoGP™, is pleased with his progression nonetheless: “Yes, many, many [injuries]! But, okay, it’s a very difficult season for me this year. My last injury with the shoulder is a big problem for me, last three races very hard, much pain, but with the Clinica Mobile I have been trying different solutions and last week I worked very hard to try and improve my situation. I am very happy with the development of it and I think it is ready for this weekend, I will try to do my best.”

Suppo confirmed not only that the Honda “production racer” is proving competitive in tests, but also agreed that the championship on a whole was heading in the right direction. He also had to rebuff questions regarding a possible return of Casey Stoner: “Sure. We have to find a way to find teams reasonably competitive machines for reasonable prices. It’s not easy because the level of factory machines is very high, but we are trying. Yamaha is doing similar things and it’s good.

“Of course, when you speak about Casey everybody is interested in knowing if he will be back one day, but there is nothing more to it at the moment. He is enjoying it [testing] and for sure for any manufacturer something like this is a dream for testing. We are very, very lucky. For sure, he loves riding the bike because you can’t replicate that. So he is happy to go there testing, no media attention or anything. I think he loved the competition but he just wanted to be in his kind of isolated world, and that is the case with the tests.”

Jarvis on the other hand spoke about Yamaha’s plans for next year, and joked that it was rider pressure that brought the seamless transmission in for the race: “Earlier today we announced the renewal with Tech3 for another two years, which is very important with them using the factory-spec bikes. Just now we have come from the Forward Racing press conference; we have a one-year programme to provide them with our solution to the ex CRT class. We will provide them with the package. They are not ready with their riders yet but the project is taking fruition, so that is new and exciting. In addition to that it is our second home race based in Italy – a really busy time to the year. And now we introduce the new gearbox we have been waiting for a while, so it’s a very exciting weekend.

“[The transmission was brought in now] with the pressure from these two! But if it’s ready for Monday, it’s ready for now. We have a deficit to Honda and need to do everything we can to challenge them over these next six races.”

The day before, Monster Yamaha Tech3’s Bradley Smith, Ducati Team test rider Michele Pirro, Came IodaRacing Project’s Danilo Petrucci, NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Alex de Angelis, as well as Yamaha Team Director Massimo Meregalli, all participated in a 5km uphill bike ride up Mount Titano to the Old Town of San Marino, supported by four members of their personal team. Starting at Fonte dell’Ovo, it was Pirro who came out on top with his team, starting his home race weekend in the best possible way.

As the MotoGP™ grid heads to the GP Aperol di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini in Misano this weekend there is once again only one thing on riders’ minds – how to close the gap to championship leader Marc Marquez.

Last time out in Silverstone it was Yamaha Factory Racing’s reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo who managed to figure it out by beating the Repsol Honda Team rookie sensation with a bold move in the final few corners. Lorenzo will aim for much of the same as he tries to cut the lead to the Repsol Honda men, including Dani Pedrosa, who will look to convert his outright pace into a win to get his title challenge back on course. Marquez may prove tougher to beat in Misano however, as he will have recovered further from the left dislocated collarbone he picked up in a crash in Sunday Warm-Up at the last race.

Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi is aiming to find his end-of-race pace directly off the start line, as that looks to be the weak link stopping him from challenging for a podium or win once more. GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista on the other hand will be searching for a way past the famous Italian, having lost out to him narrowly in the last three races. LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl has been somewhat off-colour in recent races, despite showing great pace over one lap. He will need to rediscover the race pace that saw him take second in Laguna Seca, whereas Monster Yamaha Tech3’s Cal Crutchlow will look to forget his crash-plagued Silverstone and get back to challenging for the podium.

The Ducati Team duo may fare better at Misano than in previous outings, as they occasionally use it as a test track during the season. Yet no doubt they will have Tech3’s British rookie Bradley Smith to contend with, who has recently been tussling with the Ducatis on track. Ignite Pramac Racing’s Ben Spies is once again replaced due to injury by Ducati test rider Michele Pirro, who will make it a fully Italian garage alongside Energy T.I. Pramac’s Andrea Iannone.

Power Electronics Aspar’s Aleix Espargaro still looks near unstoppable as top CRT on his ART machine, and the likes of NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Colin Edwards and Avintia Blusens’ Hector Barbera will have a tough job chasing him down.

The top news running up to Misano is that of inaugural Moto2™ World Champion Toni Elias, who has now departed the Blusens Avintia team. The Spaniard is in negotiations regarding a move to the eni FIM Superbike World Championship, while he is replaced in the intermediate class by Argentina’s Ezequiel Iturrioz.

Fresh from winning his home race, Marc VDS Racing Team’s Scott Redding will head into this weekend’s GP Aperol di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini in Misano as favourite, with Tuenti HP 40 title rival Pol Espargaro needing a good race to reduce the Brit’s lead.

Redding was on superb form in Silverstone, and will prove tough to beat in Misano, however with the likes of Interwetten Paddock Moto2 Racing’s Tom Luthi and Italtrans Racing Team’s Takaaki Nakagami on form at the moment, there are many contenders for the win. Espargaro had a weekend to forget in the UK, though in Misano will still remain one of the favourites for the podium, as will his teammate Esteve Rabat, who usually looks strong towards the end of the race.

The NGM Mobile Forward Racing team could be one to watch with local rider Alex de Angelis, as well as two other strong Italians in the form of Simone Corsi and Mattia Pasini. Idemitsu Honda Team Asia has replaced Yuki Takahashi permanently with Malaysian Azlan Shah, whilst Australian Jason O’Halloran steps in once again for the inured Mike di Meglio in the JiR Moto2 team.

Gino Rea is the only wildcard this weekend with his Gino Rea Montaze Broz Racing team. Blusens Avintia’s Dani Rivas will not contest the race due to injury and will be covered for by Spanish compatriot Alex Mariñelarena. At Federal Oil Gresini Moto2, Italy’s Franco Morbidelli stands in for Doni Tata Pradita for this event.

Argiñano & Gines Racing’s Steven Odendaal is set to appear in Misano, despite suffering a broken right ankle in Moto2 Warm-Up at Silverstone, but will have to pass a medical test before being allowed out on-track.

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Luis Salom is firmly in charge as the Moto3™ contingent heads to this weekend’s GP Aperol di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini in Misano to fight it out for the lightweight title.

Salom has looked in dominant form in recent races, and the likes of Team Calvo’s Maverick Viñales and Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins will be trying their best to get past the Mallorcan and claw back some points. Rins’ teammate Alex Marquez is proving to be a constant podium threat, whilst Caretta Technology – RTG’s Jack Miller is always one to watch.

Away from the track there is a significant technology switch with the Ambrogio Racing team switching from Suter-Honda bikes to Mahindras. This means that for the first time ever there will be four permanent Mahindra bikes on the grid in the Moto3™ World Championship. Add to that the Misano wildcard of Italian Andrea Locatelli alongside regular riders Miguel Oliveira and Efren Vazquez, and there will be five.

And providing another twist this weekend will be wildcard Luca Marini with his team Twelve Racing – the Italian being the half brother of nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi.

MotoGP: tutto facile per Lorenzo, Pedrosa out

Gara particolare quella di Misano Adriatico, che anche prima della partenza regala forti emozioni. Daniel Pedrosa che scatta dalla Pole accusa qualche problema tecnico ed è costretto a schierarsi a fine griglia. Allo start è il maiorchino Jorge Lorenzo a prendere la testa della gara, posizione che manterrà “facilmente” fino alla fine dei 27 giri in programma. Il suo diretto antagonista Daniel Pedrosa, dopo poche curve viene toccato da Hector Barbera finendo nella ghiaia della Quercia (una delle curve del circuito) la sua rincorsa al leader della classifica iridata. Dopo qualche giro è anche il turno dell’Inglese Cal Crutchlow, che abbandona la gara per una caduta

Ma non finisce qui. Un telaio leggermente rinnovato e nuovi accorgimenti tecnici, portano la Ducati DesmoSedici ed il suo cavaliere Valentino Rossi sul secondo gradino del podio. Per parecchi giri dopo il via, il pilota di Tavullia è stato tallonato dal Tedesco Stefan Bradl che però ha visto vanificarsi tutti i suoi tentativi di attacco, cedendo la terza piazza al pilota Spagnolo del Team Gresini Alvaro Bautista che nel frattempo si era sbarazzato anche di Andrea Dovizioso;

Dopo questa vittoria Jorge Lorenzo porta a 38 punti il vantaggio sul suo diretto inseguitore Daniel Pedrosa. A sole cinque gare dalla fine del campionato, la lotta al titolo iridato rimane aperta e sicuramente le sorprese non mancheranno.

Marco Simoncelli sarà sicuramente felice di vedere sul podio del circuito a lui intitolato, il suo idolo ed amico, e la moto con la quale ci ha regalato tantissime emozioni.
